Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between French doors and patio (sliding) doors?+
French doors are side-hinged and open inwards or outwards on hinges, typically as a pair of leaves. Sliding doors glide horizontally along a track. French doors create a wider unobstructed opening when fully open, but sliding doors offer larger glass panels and slimmer sightlines when closed.
What materials are French doors available in?+
We supply French doors in aluminium (Reynaers), UPVC (REHAU) and timber. Aluminium offers the slimmest sightlines and the widest colour range; UPVC is the most cost-effective; timber is the natural fit for heritage and conservation projects.
Are French doors secure?+
Yes. All our French doors are fitted with multi-point locking systems and meet PAS 24 — the UK security standard for doors and windows. Many of our products also carry Secured by Design accreditation, the police-approved security mark.
Can French doors be made wider with side panels?+
Absolutely. Sidelights (fixed glazed panels next to the doors) and transoms (above) are common additions when you want a wider feature opening. We can specify the configuration as part of your survey.
How thermally efficient are French doors?+
Our aluminium and UPVC French doors feature thermally broken profiles or multi-chamber UPVC sections, achieving U-values that meet or exceed current Building Regulations (Document L). Triple-glazed configurations are available for projects targeting Passivhaus or EnerPHit performance.
