Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a flat roof light and a lantern?+
A flat roof light is a single pane of glass set flush with the roof line — clean, minimal, and ideal for contemporary extensions. A lantern is a pyramid-shaped glazed structure that sits proud of the roof, suitable for traditional and Edwardian-style spaces. Lanterns let in more light per square metre of roof opening.
Can roof lights be opened?+
Yes. We supply electric opening roof lights with rain sensors that close the unit automatically if it starts to rain. Opening configurations are popular over kitchens for ventilation and over en-suites where steam needs to escape.
Are walk-on roof lights safe?+
Walk-on glass uses laminated, toughened safety glass rated for residential pedestrian load. They're typically used as light wells over basement spaces or as terrace inserts above lower-floor rooms. Each unit is engineered for its specific span and load.
How thermally efficient are roof lights?+
Our roof lights use thermally broken aluminium frames and double or triple-glazed units with low-E coatings. Korniche and Atlas systems achieve U-values that comfortably meet Building Regulations Document L, and solar-control glass options reduce summer heat gain.
Do roof lights need planning permission?+
Most roof light installations on existing roofs fall under permitted development and don't need planning permission, provided they don't protrude more than 150mm above the roof slope. Listed buildings and conservation areas are an exception — we can advise during the survey.
